“The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I change”

Carl Rogers, On Becoming a Person: A Therapist’s View of Psychotherapy

What is Person Centered Counselling?

Person Centered Counselling is one of the humanistic approaches to psychotherapy which was founded by an American Psychologist Carl Rogers in the 1940’s, so has been around a long time and it’s effectiveness researched thoroughly. Person Centered Therapists believe in Carl Rogers’ idea that, given the right conditions a person can reach their full potential and become their true self.

To help a client achieve their full potential, a Person Centered Therapist will offer:

Unconditional Positive Regard - accept and value a client

Congruence - being honest and transparent in how they value you and your world

Empathy - walk alongside you and see your viewpoint as if they were you

BACP website offers guidance about what therapy is and what to expect from a counselling session.

  • The amount of therapy sessions varies greatly, it is a very individual experience. Some clients are short term (around 6 sessions) some clients need a little longer to explore their difficulties. Counselling is unique to you, most clients know when they are ready to move on from counselling. With Person Centered Counselling, the client is in control of how many sessions they have, it is not prescriptive. Client and Therapist will review and discuss the client’s needs throughout the therapy.
